What is Makha Bucha Day?
Makha Bucha Day is one of the most important Buddhist festivals in Thailand. It is celebrated on the full moon of the third lunar month, which usually falls in February or March. This day commemorates a significant event in Buddhism when 1,250 disciples gathered to hear the Buddha deliver a sermon.
The teachings of the Buddha that are celebrated on this day include the principles of the Four Noble Truths and the Eightfold Path, which form the foundation of Buddhist philosophy.
On Makha Bucha Day, many Buddhists participate in ceremonies and rituals, including visiting temples to make merit, offering food to monks, and engaging in meditation. It is also a day for reflecting on one’s actions and making commitments to live in accordance with Buddhist teachings.
In Thailand, all entertainment venues are closed, and the sale of alcohol is prohibited on this day, allowing individuals to focus on spiritual activities and community engagement.
