What is Asarnha Bucha Day?

Asarnha Bucha Day, also known as Dhamma Day, commemorates the Buddha’s first sermon after his enlightenment, where he set in motion the "Wheel of Dhamma." This sermon introduced the Four Noble Truths and the Noble Eightfold Path, which form the core principles of Buddhist teachings. Celebrated on the full moon of the eighth lunar month, Asarnha Bucha Day marks the birth of the Buddhist monastic community, as the Buddha gained his first five disciples.

In Thailand, people observe this day by making merit at temples, offering food and necessities to monks, and participating in meditation sessions. The Wian Tian candle-lit procession is a key ritual, symbolizing the light of wisdom dispelling the darkness of ignorance. It’s also a time for reflection on moral conduct and the path toward spiritual awakening. Alcohol sales are banned on this day, in line with its focus on mindfulness and ethical living.
